GTA IV - Grand Theft Average?

Post by Pipboy_3000 on Wed May 21, 2008 12:36 am

Is it just me or is it quite painfully obvious that either rockstar have been slipping LOTS of money to review sites and mags or the entire reviewing community needs a bit of a kick in the ass for getting drawn into the hype

Dont get me wrong its not a bad game by a long shot, i just really don't think it deserves the perfect scores it has been getting everywhere. The story is OK at best and not really much different from any of the other you start off poor, kill a lot of people usually get some revenge somewhere along the line and end up rich.
Theres almost nothing new apart from you now have a phone (which you had in saints row 2 years ago), and even that doesnt do much. Also there is a really annoying distribution of good cars, there are Turismos left right and centre but after playing nearly 30 hours when i completed it i had only come across one comet, one infernus, and one super GT which i diddnt even get to drive in the end because it had exploded by the end of the mission.

Thats just a few things with the game that bug me a little, but as i said before dont get me wrong its still a realllly good game and i'm glad i got it I just wouldn't consider it the pinnicle of gaming at this present time

When he turns while running, he runs at an angle. When he runs against a building his upper body/head hit the wall, his legs, however, pop right through.

10/10? REALLY?

I have only evere played GTA IV on duncans PS3 it was good but not as good as i was lead to belive for example as stef said it followed the same general principles as the other GTA's. However there were one or 2 new bits i liked for example they flying throught the windows screen and realistic damage to cars also the taxis will drive you anywhere this is good as i get feed up of driving miles in san andreas just to get a mission fail it and have to do it all over again. However i don't think 10/10 is fair 8-9 maybe but its just rockstar staying with a winning formula and editing it slightly graphics wise. But the one thing that really ennoys me is where the hell is the pc realse and is there going to be one as surely changing it to pc format wont take long and the graphics can be handeled by a pc. The only explanation is that rockstar are adding stuff for the pc realse and if they are what are they adding.

Also a point stef made about the mobile phone you get one in san andreas so thats not new.

Re: GTA IV - Grand Theft Average?

The phone in San Andreas was nothing more than an updated pager from the original GTA, though. A device for people to tell you about jobs. Am I correct that in GTA4 you get to use the phone to actually call out to other people? Wowsers!

Also, a possible reason for the PC delay could be anti-piracy. It's a LOT easier to copy a game on PC than it is on consoles. With everybody pissing their pants to play GTA4 when it came out, by limiting it to a console only release it means people actually pay for their copy. When it comes out for PC give it a day or two and you'll see torrents with thousands of seeds. I'm not saying this is the reason, but if I was in the industry I'd certainly use this tactic.

yeah you can call people and take them out to dinner! or go drinking! its completley and totally errr...... pointless and crap. I only use it to do specail missions and stuff, something there was just a marker for in previous games.

the car distribution thing as well is REALLY starting to get on my tits, in previous games there was usually at least ONE rare car that could be found somewhere on the map but now half of them are nigh on impossible to find and then when you do finally find one its usually a flaming heap of metal after a little while of ragging it

TL;DR: GTA4 Sux.

I disagree. Go die.

I went out and impulse bought a 340 console exclusively for this game. It was worth it, thats my story and im sticking to it. Not going to dispute any of the points, because i'm pretty sure they're valid but i feel justified.

I have to agree with stef even tho GTA: IV more than likely has the best graphics on the market at the moment, the gameplay and story line are exactly the same as previous GTA's just with new graphics and characters..

has to be said, that the game was overly advertised as "supreme" to all others, and being one of the sados who queued up at midnight...i am let down...in some ways as you guys now i say in JCs...i feel the grapics are just the same as the orginal "The Getaway" on Ps2...grrr!

gotta be 7/10...maybe less

i really cant see how you can say the graphics on GTA IV look the same as the getaway...

is very different from

YES the getaway uses actual photos as textures but GTA has much higher res textures, more polygons, virtually no fogging, better lighting and shading and a lot more going on.... but other than that i can totally see how they look the same

i find when i think about a game the graphics looked far better on my head then when i go back to actually playing the old game, ff7 an example, resi evil another, just goes to show how much you sometimes see in a world is down to imagination and perception

Trust Mat to pick up on that subtle underlying reason, but anyway to stay on topic, you cannot compare an old PS2 game to a new next gen console game unless you like looking like a fool or you are comparing game play not graphics sorry Dunc.

theres no way you could get those graphics on the PS2, the lighting alone would be too much let alone all the much higer res textures, polygon count, draw distance and the huge amount of post processing that goes on

The PS2 doesnt have enough memory for all that let alone the processing power

i understand what duncan is trying to say, but there is no way on earth that G TA IV would run on a ps2. howver i can see what duncan means the graphics aren't that amazing but this is probably a result of all the hype aurrounding the realse which bigged up the whole game way to much.
